Shin splints is an acute pain on the shin and lower leg of the patient. This condition is commonly triggered by prolonged running, typically on hard plains and irregularly shaped surfaces. It is also known to the medical community as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS).
Aside from MTSS, the pain on the shin may be caused by the following:
- Compartment syndrome
- Stress fracture
Shin pain is assessed and treated frequently at The Fresh Foot Centre. Each of our podiatrists is knowledgeable and skilled in gait analysis. They are passionate about caring for the foot health and lower limb conditions of their patients. To ascertain a diagnosis, a thorough examination such as looking at the patient’s history, checking the palpation, walking and running exercises are performed. Should further image testing (i.e. ultrasound, X-ray, or MRI) is required, the podiatrist will provide the referral. He or she will then implement a plan to control the pain in order to help you get back to your functional activity as soon as possible.
Your treatment plan may include the following measures to properly correct foot posture or lessen the strain on the inflamed or injured structures:
- Rest
- Ice application
- Dry needling
- InterX therapy
- Specialised exercises
- Special off-loading boots
- Anti-inflammatory therapy
- Gait re-training
- Specialised orthotics
We have state-of-the-art 3D foot imaging laser scanner and computerised pressure plate system which we utilise to assess conditions and make the right orthotics if needed. Our services and orthotics can be availed on the spot from your health insurance. No referral is necessary.
