Achilles Tendinopathy

Achilles Tendinopathy is a condition that causes pain, stiffness and swelling at the posterior aspect of your heel bone and ankle – that is where the Achilles tendon is located. It is usually caused by repetitive strain or trauma on the Achilles region which results in micro tears to the tendon. Once this occurs, patients often have difficulty moving the ankle joint in a downwards motion and reports chronic pain when walking, going up stairs, exercising and being able to perform activities of daily living.

Podiatrists at The Fresh Foot Centre servicing areas such as Narre Warren, Berwick, Hallam, Cranbrourne, Beaconsfield, Pakenham, Hampton Park, Dandenong as well as many other, are trained in providing Achilles Tendinopathy treatment.

Causes of Achilles Tendinopathy:

  • Over loading the Achilles tendon- For example: Running daily on uneven , or hard surfaces can cause overuse of the Achilles.
  • Training errors- or a poor running technique.
  • Training or exercising on sloped surfaces.
  • Having a cavus foot type also known as a high-arched foot.
  • Having tightness in the calves or thighs can contribute to Achilles Tendinopathy.
  • Poor footwear choices.
  • Typically it occurs in women more than men.

The podiatrists at The Fresh Foot Centre will conduct a full biomechanical assessment and determine the cause and the best treatment outcome.

Treatments May Include:

  • Stretches and strengthening exercises
  • Taping and strapping of the Achilles
  • Footwear advice
  • Heel raise inserted into the shoes to offload the Achilles tendon
  • Orthotics to distribute the plantar pressure more evenly in the feet.
